On paper the mix makes no sense. The same issue of Vanity Fair will put a movie star on the cover, run a 10,000-word investigation into a financial fraud behind it, then close with royal gossip and a cocktail recipe. Somehow it’s worked since 1983, and nobody else has managed to copy it. It’s why the magazine broke the identity of Deep Throat in 2005 while also being the place everyone turns to for the annual Hollywood Issue with that famous fold-out cover.

The photography deserves its own mention. Annie Leibovitz built half her reputation in these pages, and the portrait work is still the standard other glossies get measured against. If you keep magazines around after reading them, this is one of the ones that survives the clear-out.
