Nicknamed ‘Charm City’, Maryland’s Baltimore lives up to its name by being a city of hidden charms. From historical monuments to quirky diners, there are many unique attractions that this port city has to offer. Below are just some of the best things to see and do when visiting Baltimore.
Explore the history of Edgar Allan Poe
Master of macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, spent much of his life in Baltimore. Lovers of gothic literature can learn about the writer’s life and works at the Poe House and Museum. You can also visit ‘The Raven’ author’s grave at Westminster Hall and Burial Ground.
Catch a game at the Ravens Stadium
If you’re a sports fanatic, why not consider booking a room at ROOST Baltimore near the Ravens Stadium and consider booking a tour? Alternatively, if you time it right, you may be able to catch a game. The stadium is renowned for its extra-wide concourses and high-quality concession stands (that serve crab cakes – the state dish of Maryland). Nearby Camden Yards is also worth exploring if you’re a baseball fan.
Step back in time at Fort McHenry
This pentagon-shaped fort played an important part in the War of 1812 and was the inspiration for the US national anthem. Poet Francis Scott Key wrote ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ after witnessing a 25 hour bombardment of the fort, after which the American flag defiantly continued to fly over the garrison. You can take a ranger-led tour around the facility and watch the flag-changing ceremony. The fort also offers stunning panoramic views of the harbor.
Take a wander along the Waterfront Promenade
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor has a scenic walkway that is lined with restaurants and shops. Along this promenade, you will also find historic ships like the USS Constellation and the National Aquarium – often regarded as one of the best aquariums in the world. The walkway is particularly beautiful at sunrise and at sunset.
Head into the George Peabody Library
The George Peabody Library is a must-visit attraction for bibliophiles – the 19th Century building houses over 300,000 books over multiple levels. It is open to the public and free to wander around. It’s recommended that you visit on a weekday morning to avoid the crowds.
Enjoy a whimsical breakfast at Papermoon Diner
There are many great places to eat breakfast in Baltimore, but if you’re looking for something a bit different, make sure to pay a visit to Papermoon Diner. This eccentric eatery is full of multicolored surreal trinkets ranging from toys to mannequins. You can also eat lunch or dinner here.
Climb to the top of Federal Hill
The neighborhood park offers some of the best vistas of Baltimore. There’s a viewpoint at the top where you’ll also find an original Civil War cannon. Make sure to also browse some of the boutique shops in the area and consider grabbing a craft beer at one of the nearby pubs. It could even be a great location for a picnic.
