The Lady stopped printing in April 2025, which makes these back issues something a little unusual: copies of the longest-running women’s magazine Britain ever had. It launched in February 1885, founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles – grandfather of the Mitford sisters – and it ran for 140 years straight before going into liquidation.

The history packed into this title is absurd. Lewis Carroll wrote puzzles for it. Nancy Mitford wrote for it. Wodehouse parodied it in the Jeeves books as Milady’s Boudoir, and if you’ve watched Downton Abbey, The Lady is the magazine the family uses to advertise for servants – because that’s what it was genuinely famous for. Its classified ads for nannies, housekeepers and butlers were the way well-off British households found staff for over a century.

The magazine itself reads like a time capsule of a very particular England: royal features, etiquette, recipes, gardens, and that unmistakable tone of polite firmness about how things ought to be done. Now that no new issues will ever exist, these are the last of them.
